Times assume continuous refrigeration at 40 °F or below. When in doubt, throw it out. Freezer times are for quality: “Because freezing 0° F (-18° C) keeps food safe indefinitely, the following recommended storage times are for quality only.” FDA

What the sources say

Avocados stay at room temperature until ripe, which FoodKeeper describes as tender, fully developed and ready to eat; the Nebraska Extension chart uses the same words.12

Once ripe, they get 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, and FoodKeeper says that refrigerator timeline applies to ripe fruit.1

Nebraska and the NDSU Extension food storage guide list the same 3 to 4 days.23

The sources part ways on the freezer: FoodKeeper and the NDSU guide mark freezing as not recommended, while Nebraska lists 8 months, labelled freezing avocados.132

The National Center for Home Food Preservation says avocados are not satisfactorily frozen whole or sliced, and are best frozen as purée, unsweetened for salads and sandwiches or sweetened for other uses.4

For a better quality purée it adds 1/4 teaspoon of ascorbic acid to each quart, or 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for each 2 avocados.4

It starts with avocados that yield to gentle pressure and have rinds free from dark blemishes.4

The NDSU guide also marks pantry storage as not recommended, which differs from the ripen at room temperature approach in FoodKeeper and the Nebraska chart.312

Iowa State University Extension lists avocado among the climacteric fruits and says these should ripen at room temperature and then be refrigerated to extend their life.5

Because they keep releasing ethylene gas even in storage, it advises keeping them separate from ethylene-sensitive produce to prevent premature spoilage.5
