Times assume continuous refrigeration at 40 °F or below. When in doubt, throw it out. Freezer times are for quality: “Because freezing 0° F (-18° C) keeps food safe indefinitely, the following recommended storage times are for quality only.” FDA

What the sources say

FoodKeeper gives fresh asparagus 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator from the date of purchase and 5 months in the freezer.1

The Nebraska Extension chart repeats both numbers for asparagus and shows only a dash in its pantry column.2

The NDSU Extension food storage guide starts its refrigerator range a day earlier, at 2 to 4 days, while agreeing on 5 months frozen.3

That makes the refrigerator the one cell where the sources differ, with 2 days at the low end in the NDSU guide against 3 days in FoodKeeper and the Nebraska chart.312

The NDSU guide marks pantry storage of asparagus as not recommended, and FoodKeeper lists no pantry time at all.31

Spear thickness decides the blanching time in the National Center for Home Food Preservation method: small spears get 2 minutes in water, medium spears 3 minutes and large spears 4 minutes.4

Before that, it asks for young, tender spears that are washed thoroughly and sorted into sizes.4

The stalks are trimmed by removing the scales with a sharp knife, then cut into even lengths that fit the containers.4

Once blanched, the asparagus is cooled promptly and drained, then packed with no headspace, sealed and frozen.4
